Pegasus Spyware Used to Hack the Phone of Polish Government Critics

According to Gazeta Wyborcza, a Polish daily newspaper critical of the ruling party, Poland’s Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) has been alleged to have hacked the phone of Jacek Karnowski, mayor of the coastal city of Sopot, 10 to 20 times between 2018 and 2019.

The Polish mayor linked to the opposition was actually not the only goverment critic to be allegedly monitored by the country’s special services: according to Associated Press, Pegasus software, developed by Israel-based NSO Group, had been illegally used in Poland to hack the phones of government critics, including an opposition senator, a former deputy prime minister and a top prosecutor.

Pegasus can be installed remotely without the targeted individual’s interaction, granting the NSO customers who control it access to text messages, photos, emails, videos, and contact lists. It can even record calls or activate a phone’s microphone and cameras to create new recordings.
